Elanor Iris

”But if it’s to be a flower-name, then I don’t trouble about the length: it must be a beautiful flower, because, you see, I think she is very beautiful, and is going to be beautifuller still.”
Frodo thought for a moment. ”Well, Sam, what about elanor, the sun-star, you remember the little golden flower in the grass of Lothlórien?”
(J. R. R. Tolkien: The Return of the King)

In Greek mythology, Iris (Ἶρις) is the personification of the rainbow and messenger of the gods. She is also known as one of the goddesses of the sea and the sky. Iris links the gods to humanity. She travels with the speed of wind from one end of the world to the other, and into the depths of the sea and the underworld.
